Serafina Steer: 20/4/15

English harpist Serafina Steer has had a truly impressive career. With three albums under her belt and collaborations with the likes of Patrick Wolf, Tunng, James Yorkston, Jarvis Cocker and Bat For Lashes, she is a hugely talented force. Steer’s clear voice, with its occasional, quite unplaceable regional burr, is one of the finest updates of the British folk tradition to be heard in years.

Steer’s sound roams the pop genre, from electronic lo-fi to avant-garde, and builds textures behind her quick-witted lyricism. She is anything but twee, instead she remains subversive and at times sensual, her femininity arching through her music.

Off the back of their brilliant debut Ex’s have picked up attention from the likes of the NME and DIY Mag, and this exciting four-piece are going from strength to strength. FEWS have a similarly brilliant reputation with their unique blend of riff-heavy guitar pop that is both inventive and propulsive at the same time. This Tuesday sees the monthly return of Fierce Panda vs Disorder at The Shacklewell Arms. This instalment sees the new Fierce Panda signing Kieran Leonard & The Horses pay a full band set, fresh from support Father John Misty and Ryan Adams, and before he plays with The Strokes at Hyde Park. Support comes from brand new band ALMA, and entry is free.

Marker Starling will be performing live on Wednesday alongside the release of his new album ROSY MAZE. More recently he has been supported by a band consisting of Jay Anderson (drums) and Matt McLaren (bass), both of whom play a prominent role in the new album.

On Thursday Bad Vibrations presents The Magic Gang. Currently on tour supporting Wolf Alice, this Brighton four-piece maintains their slack rock sound whilst drawing you in with undeniable pop sensibilities – we expect great things. Bête Noire, with support from the Climbing Boys, will be performing live on Friday. They create spiky, edgy, sultry and downright infectious music. With only two singles under their belt, they’ve already received support from the likes of NME, Clash Magazine, Artrocker and Xfm.

Stars in Their Eyes comes to the Shacklewell this Saturday: Local musicians perform full cover sets of their favourite band in support of rhythms for life, a charity that feeds Hackney’s homeless. Tickets are only £4 so come down and support some wicked live music all in the name of a good cause.
