£3 Advance

Was that fleeting shape in the corner of your eye a mere trick of the light? Was that sound only the howling of the wind, or something more sinister? There is no denying it—the season of the witch is once again upon us. This Halloween night, unleash your inner ghoul at The Shacklewell Arms, where House of Jealous Lovers presents a truly bloodcurdling blowout: Back From the Grave.

Coming to you live, or at least undead, Taman Shud will unleash their evil on the assembled coven of freaks and fiends. And that’s not to mention masquerading headliners “Big Big Blood,” who are sure to put your hair on end.

The Shack will be decked out to gruesome perfection, and garden games and fearsome film projections will chill you to the bone. DJs Grim Morrison, Kurt No Brain, Voodoo Chile, and Brian Jones Was Massacred will provide the evening’s petrifying soundtrack. For those who dare, advance tickets are available for £3, and move to £5 on the door.

“This all-female quartet cut the same rumbling rockabilly n’ surf guitar calamity that put the hop in Jack Rabbit Slim’s restaurant in Pulp Fiction, that hit the lost highway with Frank Booth and his cronies in Blue Velvet and that shook up the delinquent drapes of the trash deluxe Crybaby. They’re the bubblegum bustin’, sullen swagger offspring of Link Wray, Duane Eddy and the Ventures.” – Pop Matters

Tickets: £6

Among the many highlights of this year’s inaugural Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia – itself one of the festival high watermarks of 2012 – was the explosively magnificent half hour set courtesy of local heroes Mugstar. Drawing on influences far and away from the usual template of wah-wah pedals and ramped-up fuzzboxes, Mugstar are a band that dares to challenge standard orthodoxies as to what psychedelia actually is. This is a band less in thrall to the legacy of the West Coast cosmic explorers of the 1960s and more in keeping with the European standard bearers that appeared in the next decade.” – The Quietus
